Demodex, also known as Demodectic Mange or Red Mange is a skin condition that begins as a mite which all dogs carry. It is a condition that is EXTREMELY common in Boxers and English Bulldogs and should be researched by anyone and everyone considering the purchase of one of these two breeds. The reasons that some dogs break out with Demodex and some don't is very controversial and somewhat of a mystery. We do not personally breed any dogs that exhibit signs or symptoms of this condition at any point in their lives, although some breeders do. Be sure to ask when considering the purchase of a puppy.
I am adding this information to my site because I think that anyone considering the purchase of a Boxer or an English Bulldog needs to do their research on this topic and be prepared to potentially deal with it at some point. Although not all dogs of these breeds get it, it does appear in high numbers. Demodex is a non life altering issue that can look bad if not diagnosed early, but is easy and not expensive to treat. Please do your research on this issue.
If you should find yourself dealing with a puppy that does require treatment we recommend that you ask your vet about treating the outbreak using Cephalexin antibiotics, (if antibiotics are necessary in your case) and daily Ivermectin doses. We have found this to be the most effective and inexpensive means of treatment. We also recommend that you feed a natural, holistic diet. Diet can make all the difference in the life and overall health of your pet.
The statements above are purely our opinions and are not to be taken as direction for treating your dog. They are just statements and methods that we have personally found useful in our dealings with this issue. If you suspect your dog may have Demodex, or any other condition you should seek medical attention from a Veterinarian.
